World Bowl
The World Bowl was the American football - final of the NFL Europe (NFLE) that set the gaming operations in June of 2007. It was considered the European counterpart to the Super Bowl of the National Football League (NFL).
The name comes from the first season (1991) of the previous league World League of American Football (WLAF), in which teams from several continents were still represented or were planned for later.
The first World Bowl was played in 1991 in the previously selected Wembley Stadium in London . The native London Monarchs qualified for and won the game and the World Bowl- trophy , a 18.6 kg heavy globe of glass . In 1992 Montreal was designated as the venue. The home team could not qualify this time, so fans of the participating US teams had to travel a long way.
After the NFLE was restricted to European teams in 1995 and renamed the National Football League Europe in 1998 , the name World Bowl was retained. The home stadium of the best-placed team in the first half of the season has now been chosen as the venue. This was also the host, even if the second half of the season was less successful. From 1998 the allocation was regulated differently again.
After 2005, the World Bowl 2006 was held for the first time in consecutive years at the same location, in the Düsseldorf LTU arena . Since 2002, four out of five finals have taken place in the home stadium of the Rhein Fire , which had to move in the meantime due to construction work.
As a competitor to the NFL there was a World Football League in 1974 and 1975 , the only final of which on December 5, 1974 was also called the World Bowl . The Birmingham Americans beat the Florida Blazers 22:21.
The World Bowls were designated with the year until 2000, and only then, like the Super Bowl , were officially numbered with Roman numerals. The official name from 2005 to 2007 was Yello Strom World Bowl .
The Yello Strom World Bowl XV took place on June 23, 2007 in the Frankfurt Commerzbank-Arena , the home stadium of the Frankfurt Galaxy . The Hamburg Sea Devils prevailed against the Frankfurt Galaxy with 37:28 and won the last World Bowl in their first finals.
