The Hamburg Sea Devils were an American football team that played in NFL Europe (NFLE) from 2005 to 2007 . The team was the successor to the Scottish Claymores , which stopped playing at the end of the 2004 season.
history
For years, the NFLE had tried to locate Hamburg as the Hamburg Blue Devils had been very successful there for years. On November 24, 2004, the NFL Europe named the Hamburg Sea Devils as the new team in the league. The Sea Devils played their home games in the Volksparkstadion , which is the home of Bundesliga soccer club Hamburger SV and has a capacity of 57,274 spectators. The training took place on the training grounds of the GFL team Hamburg Blue Devils on Hemmingstedter Weg.
The team played as the ninth European team in the league's 13-year history, while Hamburg was the 13th European city to host NFLE games.
With Jack Bicknell , the Hanseatic townspeople were able to win the league's most experienced coach as head coach. Bicknell had been a coach in Europe since the World League was founded in 1992 and had won more games than any other coach in league history. Earlier, El Caballero the Barcelona Dragons , with whom he in 1997 and the World Bowl had won, and the Scottish Claymores coached. After Jack Bicknell's resignation as head coach of the Hamburg Sea Devils, he was followed by the previous offensive coordinator of the Sea Devils, Vince Martino.
On March 9, 2005, Kathrin Platz was appointed managing director of Sea Devils. She was the first woman to head an NFL Europe team.
On April 16, 2005, the Hamburg Sea Devils, the first team to come into the league afterwards, scored a victory on the third day of the match. With that they set a new record.
As the youngest team in NFL Europe, the Sea Devils won the last Yello Strom World Bowl XV on June 23, 2007 in front of 48,125 spectators in the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt against the Frankfurt Galaxy with 37:28 .
With the cessation of the game operations of the NFL Europe 2007, the team was dissolved.
