The Cologne Centurions were a Cologne- based American football team that played in the NFL Europe from 2004 as the successor to the Barcelona Dragons .

The Cologne Centurions were founded on September 1st, 2003 and played their home games in the Rhein-Energie-Stadion with around 50,000 seats. The team's mascot was the ancient Roman centurion "Jupp Maximus". Until 2005, the project was led by Jacques Orthen and his assistant Stephen C. Smith, who were coached by Peter Vaas. From 2006 David Duggan trained the Cologne Centurions .

In addition to the sporting rivalry within their own league, the team also had to fight for spectators and approval within the city due to the two traditional Cologne teams Cologne Crocodiles and Cologne Falcons .

On March 14, 2007, the team was briefly renamed Centurions Cologne for advertising reasons , in order to express an even stronger bond with Cologne. When it became known on June 29, 2007 that the game operations of the NFL Europe would be set, this also meant the end for the Centurions Cologne after the end of the 2007 season.
