About this picture

Unterföhring is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Munich and is located on the northeastern outskirts of Munich . Unterföhring is one of the most important media locations in Germany.

geography

location

Unterföhring is located on the north-eastern outskirts of Munich. In addition to the state capital, the municipalities of Ismaning in the north and Aschheim in the east border the municipality.

The base line Unterföhrung-Aufkirchen was created in 1801 for a complete survey of Bavaria . One of the two base pyramids of the endpoints of this base line is in Unterföhring north of the Föhringer Ring.

Waters

The municipality is bounded in the west by the Isar . In the area of the municipality Unterföhring there are also the Poschinger Weiher , the Mittlere-Isar-Kanal , the Feringasee and parts of the Ismaninger reservoir .

history

Until the church is planted

Before Munich was founded around 1158, there was an important river crossing over the Isar, the Föhringer Bridge. Unterföhring, like Oberföhring, which today belongs to Munich, goes back to the place Föhring ( Feringin ), which was first identified in a document in 807. Unterföhring was first mentioned in 1180 as an independent place ( inferius Feringin ). Later it was part of the former Ismaning county , which was part of the Freising monastery . Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 the place belongs to Bavaria. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

After the Second World War

In the 1950s, residential construction began in northern Unterföhring, the first industrial settlement east of the railway line took place in 1955. In the 1960s, the community received a sewerage system including a sewage treatment plant, another industrial site was built on Feringastraße and the recreation area known today as Poschinger Weiher was expanded. In 1971 the incorporation into the city of Munich was prevented as part of the district reform. Two years later, in 1973, Unterföhring was connected to the Munich S-Bahn network . In 1982 the local recreation area Feringasee was opened to the public, in 1984 the Protestant church in St.-Florian-Straße was inaugurated. In 1988, construction work began on the “Unterföhring Süd” residential area and a sports and leisure center north of the industrial area.

From 2002 to 2006, the railway line, which is mainly used by the S-Bahn, was expanded to two tracks and, as a result of a referendum in 1996, moved into a tunnel in large parts of the municipality. The Unterföhring S-Bahn station has also been in a tunnel since then, with parking spaces above ground for cars and bicycles as well as a new bus stop, which the local bus introduced in 2006 also serves. A footpath was created on the tunnel ceiling, along which the local history is told on information boards.

From 2008 to 2010, the Unterföhring community center was built on Münchener Strasse opposite the town hall, which also houses the community library. There are regular cultural events that can be attended by up to 700 visitors.

In February 2014, the municipal council decided to reorganize the former BAHOG site west of the S-Bahn station. The plans include the conversion of this geographical center to an urban one, which will better link the old town, the residential area "Unterföhring Süd", the S-Bahn station and the industrial area. In November 2015, the winner of the architectural competition was chosen, which provides for the construction of a new adult education center and music school as well as the construction of buildings for offices, businesses and apartments. The center will be a four-story building that will be used as the new town hall. Construction began on the new town center with the groundbreaking ceremony for the new adult education center on January 12, 2016. This was completed in 2019, but immediately afterwards had to be renovated for almost a year due to water damage before operations could begin.

In September 2018, the construction of a school campus with a new five-class high school and a new four-class elementary school as well as a sports hall began. The school campus is scheduled to open in September 2020.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the community grew from 5,049 to 11,296 by 6,247 inhabitants or 123.7% - the highest percentage increase in the district in the period mentioned.

Worth seeing

St. Valentine's Church
Art object

Since June 3, 2008, the roundabout in front of the S-Bahn station has been adorned with an art object by the artist Melanie Stiehl. It prevailed against several competitors in the Art and Building S-Bahn Unterföhring competition, which was advertised by the municipality and endowed with 100,000 euros .

The Catholic parish church of St. Valentin is a listed baroque building that can be considered exemplary in Upper Bavaria and one of the most important in the Munich district. Several renovations (most recently in 2012 under the pastor Dr. Markus Brunner) have restored the baroque total work of art to a state that is well worth seeing. The existing electronic organ was replaced by an appropriate pipe organ after an extensive renovation of the organ loft and a renewal of the electrical lines, thus completing the restoration of St. Valentine.

The local history museum "Feringer Sach" shows next to the local history development of Unterföhring constantly changing exhibitions on different topics.
