Hohenschäftlarn

Schäftlarn is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Munich on the Isar .

history

To 762 which was a Benedictine - monastery Schäftlarn through Waltrich, a Freisinger Domkleriker founded. From 1140 the monastery belonged to the Premonstratensian order . The place Hohenschäftlarn was first mentioned in 778, it belonged as a closed Hofmark to the monastery. Zell is attested to around 1160, but it is definitely much older. Ebenhausen does not appear before 1130 under the name Emmenhusen. Neufahrn is first mentioned in 1140 (earlier dates are uncertain).

The Schäftlarn monastery played a historical role in the Bavarian popular uprising of 1705 , when the rebels met there for the march on Munich, which resulted in the Sendlinger Murder Christmas . The monastery complex was rebuilt for the last time between 1702 and 1760, the church of St. Georg zu Hohenschäftlarn in 1729/30. Like all Bavarian monasteries, Schäftlarn was dissolved by secularization. The buildings were sold, u. a. An earthenware factory, a brewery and a mineral bath were operated here. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria in 1818, Schäftlarn became an independent political municipality. In 1866, the former King Ludwig I founded . of Bavaria rebuilt the monastery as a Benedictine monastery and promoted the establishment of a school. The well-known monastery high school with boarding school was founded by the Schäftlarn Benedictines in 1884. In 1910, Schäftlarn was elevated to the status of an abbey again.

In 1873 the community name Hohenschäftlarn was officially changed to Schäftlarn .

With the opening of the Isar Valley Railway in 1860, the Schäftlarn , Hohenschäftlarn , Zell and Ebenhausen monasteries developed into popular excursion destinations and finally into a meeting place for Munich bohemians . The novel Jules et Jim (1953) by the French writer Henri-Pierre Roché gives an insight into this period . Based on diary entries, the book describes the love story of Henri-Pierre Roché, Franz Hessel and Helen Hessel , who lived in the Villa Heimat near the Hohenschäftlarn train station in the early 1920s . The book was filmed in 1962 by François Truffaut with Jeanne Moreau , Oskar Werner and Henri Serre under the title of the same name - Jules and Jim .

Until 2001, Ebenhausen was the seat of the Science and Politics Foundation (SWP), which has since resided in Berlin.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 4,848 to 5,853 by 1,005 inhabitants or by 20.7%.

Description : In blue, a silver ship with two slanted silver oars, above a six-pointed silver star hovering.

History : The original monastery coat of arms with a boat, two oars and a star goes back to a misinterpretation of the name Schäftlarn which arose in the middle of the 15th century, namely a derivation from the Greek word scapha ("boat"). It was linked to the old translation point on the Isar next to the monastery.

The coat of arms appears for the first time in 1462 without a star, which is probably a later decorative ingredient. The old age is confirmed by the simplicity of the motif compared to the splendor of more recent times. The municipal coat of arms is therefore one of the oldest in Bavaria.

• The monastery church of the Schäftlarn monastery is a rococo jewel . From 1733 to 1740, under François de Cuvilliés d. Ä. a new building started. From 1751 to 1760 the building was completed by Johann Georg Gunetzrhainer and Johann Michael Fischer . From 1754 to 1756 Johann Baptist Zimmermann painted and stuccoed the church. From 1756 to 1764 Johann Baptist Straub set up the altars and the pulpit. A general refurbishment that took several years was completed in July 2011.
• Parish church of St. Georg : The current construction was started in 1729 by the Munich master mason Johann Georg Ettenhofer and was completed after only 13 months
• The church of St. Michael in the district of Zell is the oldest church building in the community. According to a plaque on the church, it was consecrated on December 1, 1206 by Bishop Otto II. The church was in the 13./14. Century built on the basis of an already existing building. Expansions took place in the 15th century and 1730.
• Former post office in Ebenhausen-Schäftlarn: The post office, built according to a design by Franz Holzhammer and Hans Schnetzer in 1934, is one of the rural examples of the Bavarian Post Building School , an important school of New Building in Bavaria between 1920 and 1934 ( Fig. ).
