Franz Holzhammer (born November 6, 1893 in Munich ; † January 5, 1958 there ) was a German architect at the Post Building School .

Life

Franz Holzhammer started studying architecture at the Technical University of Munich in 1912 with Theodor Fischer and Friedrich von Thiersch . From 1914 to 1918 he had to interrupt his studies because of his military service, from which he returned home with a life-threatening wound. After graduating in 1920, he began his professional activity as a research assistant at the Oberpostdirektion Munich. In 1922 he became a government master builder and in 1924 a post builder. In 1927 Holzhammer was appointed head of the structural engineering area of the Regensburg Post Office Directorate , and from 1930 he was the successor to Robert Vorhoelzer, who had moved to Munich Technical University, in the same position for the Munich Post Office Directorate.

In 1932 Holzhammer joined the Bavarian People's Party to express his negative attitude towards National Socialism. Contrary to repeated requests to join the NSDAP , Holzhammer, unlike most of his colleagues, never allowed himself to be urged to take this step despite considerable professional disadvantages. In addition, he turned down prominent positions in the National Socialist construction industry that he had been offered, such as Roderich Fick's offer to move to Linz as city planning officer or to go to the Reich Ministry of Post in Berlin . His promotion to department president, which was actually due in 1940, did not take place until after the end of the war. During the last years of the war, Holzhammer began to rebuild destroyed post offices such as the post office on Sonnenstrasse. In 1951 Holzhammer became Vice President of the Munich Post Office. From 1952 he was also a member of the Bavarian State Architecture Committee.

In his designs, Holzhammer is very much rooted in his Upper Bavarian homeland and had a high level of empathy for local structural and landscape contexts. At the same time, however, he also opened up to new architecture, as his late work, for example the telecommunications office on Blutenburgstrasse, impressively illustrates.
