Swell:

The Munich East – Munich Airport line is a double-track , electrified main line in Bavaria , which connects Munich Airport, 30 kilometers northeast of Munich , to the city.

Route

Route near Hallbergmoos with a view towards the airport

The route begins at Munich Ost train station and heads east from there. At the level of the Steinhausen S-Bahn depot , the route turns north and meets the connecting curve from Munich-Trudering station . From here the line shares the tracks with the Munich Nordring . The stations Daglfing , Englschalking and Johanneskirchen are located in this section . At the level of the combined heat and power plant north , the north ring branches off to the west at no elevation and the route reaches the Unterföhring stop, which is located in a tunnel. After crossing the Mittlere-Isar-Kanal and passing under the Munich motorway ring, the route runs over fields to disappear again in a tunnel before Ismaning. After the Ismaning station , the line comes to the surface again. After crossing under the federal highway 471 , it runs parallel to the federal highway 388 to Fischerhäuser . Past Erching and the former site of the station of the same name , the route reaches the Hallbergmoos stop . This is outside the closed development and is served by a ring bus line. Shortly before the airport, the route meets the connecting route from Neufahrn near Freising at the Munich Airport West junction . Both lead via the airport visitor park stop and then into the tunnel under the west apron and through Terminal 1 to the end of the route, the Munich Airport Terminal train station , which is located under the central area of the airport.

history

Old station building from Ismaning until 1989

The line between Munich East and Ismaning was opened on June 5, 1909. At the same time, the Nordring went into operation, which uses the same tracks on part of the route. The city of Erding and the municipality of Oberföhring requested an extension of the railway via Ismaning to Erding. This route was not realized.

The line has been electrified since October 21, 1927. In 1959 the Zamdorf stop was closed. At the end of the 1960s, the line was threatened with closure, but was then integrated into the network of the Munich S-Bahn . After the S-Bahn opened on May 28, 1972, the route to Ismaning was first switched to bus service. However, the route was used by the special lines to the Munich Olympiastadion train station , which ran over the Nordring. It was not until September 30, 1973 that S-Bahn trains on the S3 line ran to Ismaning. With the introduction of the S-Bahn traffic, two stops were closed, these were Munich East marshalling yard and Föhringer Canal. The Leuchtenbergring stop was added.

In order to connect Munich's new airport in Erdinger Moos to the rail network, it was decided to extend the route from Ismaning there. The original plans were based on an above-ground route through Ismaning. The municipality of Ismaning, however, requested a tunnel in the area of their residential areas. While construction work between Ismaning and the airport began in 1985, the dispute over the location of the tracks continued. In 1988 it was finally decided to build an underground train station. On 26 November 1990, the German Federal Railway started in the course of reconstruction in Unterföhring a new track layout interlocking the type Sp Dr S600 from Siemens in operation, of which the station Johanneskirchen far provided was. From 1992 the signal box was also responsible for the remote control of the new section to the airport and from 1997 for the remote control of the Daglfing station .

On May 17, 1992, the extension of the route with the Ismaning tunnel station was opened and the S8 began operating to the airport. A section near Unterföhring initially remained a single track. In 2005 this section of the route was expanded. As in Ismaning, the line and station were laid underground and put into operation on November 21, 2005. The municipality of Unterföhring assumed a large part of the additional costs compared to an above-ground route.

The construction work for the extension to the airport took three years. A total of 42 kilometers of new track was laid, with a new traction power line around seven kilometers long. A 2.3 kilometer long tunnel was built under pressure from residents in Ismaning. The construction costs of the S-Bahn extension to the airport amounted to 620 million euros. An extension to Erding was already taken into account in the planning. In 1990, the Federal Railroad ordered six three-part class 420 multiple units for the airport extension. The interior design was changed with more space for luggage.

As part of an expansion of the Munich-Steinhausen S-Bahn depot , the line in the Berg am Laim area is to be relocated 25 meters south to the site of the disused Munich East marshalling yard . The construction work began with the groundbreaking on July 12, 2017.

traffic

The only passenger traffic on the route today is carried out by the Munich S-Bahn . The S8 line, which connects the airport to the city center, runs here.

In the past, goods were also transported to stops on the way. Mainly peat, bricks, cabbages and sauerkraut were transported. The latter led to the name Krautexpress , by which the route was known.

future

There are plans to better connect the airport to the city center by public transport. In order to shorten the travel time, an airport express is being considered here, which does not stop at all (or none at all) en route. The problem here is the part of the route that the route shares with the Nordring. There are level crossings at the Englschalking and Daglfing stations. These would be closed for a longer period of time than before if the line were expanded to four tracks and increased traffic. The area east of the line is also intended for a large residential area, which would then also have to be connected via the level crossings. Possible solutions are to relocate the route in a tunnel or build road bridges and underpasses in the area. Another aspect is the noise protection of the residents, who demand a tunnel for this reason.

From the airport, the route is to be extended to Erding as part of the Erdinger ring closure in order to be able to lead a third S-Bahn line to the airport and to enable a connection to Mühldorf .
