history

On June 5, 1909, the Royal Bavarian State Railways opened a local railway from Munich East to Ismaning . The municipality of Unterföhring received a stop when the route opened.

When the Munich S-Bahn opened on May 28, 1972, the German Federal Railroad stopped traffic on the route to convert it to S-Bahn operation and set up a replacement bus service for the connection to Ismaning . From September 30, 1973 trains on the S-Bahn line S3 ran between Maisach and Ismaning . The section between Johanneskirchen and Ismaning, and thus the Unterföhring stop, was only served every 40 minutes. Since the line was extended to Munich Airport in 1992 , trains on the S8 S-Bahn have been running here every 20 minutes.

The line at Unterföhring initially remained single-track. A part of the track doubling of the Deutsche Bahn planned or approved by the Municipal guide the tracks in an open trough was in a 1996 Bürgerentscheid rejected 56% of the voting opted for a tunnel construction. Then the planning started all over again, a new plan approval procedure was initiated, and the municipality committed itself to the railway to bear the additional costs incurred by the tunnel construction.

Construction could begin in 2002. The new route was realized as a tunnel over a distance of 1.426 kilometers and a green corridor with a "local history route" was created on the tunnel ceiling. Of the total costs of 83.2 million euros, the municipality of Unterföhring contributed 64.8 million euros and the railway 18.4 million euros. The tunnel station was opened on November 21, 2005, the associated above-ground station building on July 21, 2006.

Above the central platform, the ceiling is broken about every 10 meters by large square openings through which light and air can enter the tunnel station. A covered station building with a green flat roof stretches across the entire area of the underground platform . The openings towards the platform are surrounded by parapets . The flat roof above also has square openings that are covered by pyramid-shaped glass roofs.

The central part of the building is around 76 meters long and 28 meters wide and has a glass facade all around . In addition to various accesses to the platform, there is a bakery as well as a pizzeria and cafeteria. At the side are two approximately 87 meters long and 12 meters wide wing structures, most of which are open to the side. Only the outer ends are designed as closed glass pavilions in which stairs lead down to the platform. In the part that is open at the side, there are bike racks between the parapets.
