The Karlsplatz (Stachus) stop in Munich at Karlsplatz ( Stachus ) near the main train station is one of the central local transport hubs in the Bavarian capital.
Traffic significance
On the surface, meet here on the Old Town Square almost all tram lines of MVG before Karlstor together.
In addition to the traffic areas, the building also contains underground garages and loading yards for the surrounding shops as well as various supply facilities, including two diesel generators, which are able to operate the building under full load, even when it is completely disconnected from the city's electricity network. With a length of 350 m, a width of 150 m and a depth of 40 m, the facility is one of the largest underground structures in Europe.
The Stachus shopping center was sold by the city to Stadtwerke München in 2004. In the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg they found an investor who wanted to convert these two levels of the building for 30 million euros by 2009. The renovation took place from 2008 to 2011.
history
Plans for an underground S-Bahn station under the Stachus had been in existence since the early 1950s. A design was presented at the German Transport Exhibition in Munich in 1953 . The underground facilities that exist today were built in the course of the S-Bahn and U-Bahn construction in the 1960s and early 1970s.
construction
Level 1
On the first level there is an extensive shopping arcade, which was built in the late 1960s and completely renovated by 2012. There are also exits to the tram , Neuhauser Strasse, the Palace of Justice and other places around the square on the surface.
Level 2
On the second level below there is another part of the shopping center, a ticket sales point and the exits to the underground and S-Bahn. Directly at the entrance to the S-Bahn was one of the last functional passimeter houses from 1972. It was operated from 1997 until it was dismantled in February 2016 by Aktion Münchner Fahrgäste with volunteers. Originally there were three such houses at this station where tickets were sold. One has already been dismantled, the other converted into a vending machine .
In the non-public area, the 4.30 meter high loading yard is located along the entire length of the building. This is used to supply the shops in the shopping center as well as the surrounding buildings, for example the department store .
Level -3 (S-Bahn)
On the third level, the main S-Bahn line runs with lines S1 – S8 from the main station in the direction of Ostbahnhof on two tracks with four platforms in the Spanish solution (entry in the direction of travel on the left, exit in the direction of travel on the right). The platforms are clad with white wall panels and provided with a dark blue color on the pillars and in the guide strips on the walls. In 2007, 87,700 people boarding, disembarking and transferring passengers used the S-Bahn stop every day (Monday to Friday). The S-Bahn platforms are 210 meters long and 96 cm above the top of the rails.
Level -4
On the fourth level there is a mezzanine from the S-Bahn station to the underground station. Before the last stairs to the underground station, the three escalators from the second basement also meet on the west side .
Level -5 (subway)
The station of the underground lines U4 and U5 is on the fifth level, also in an east-west direction. Here you will find the longest escalators in the MVV area at the Lenbachplatz exit , with 247 steps 56.5 m in length overcoming a height difference of 20.63 m. The walls are painted with old trams , which should be reminiscent of the older Munich trams. There are separate tubes for each direction, which are connected to two cross tubes at the exits. The southern platform tube has been shifted to the west by approx. 20 m to the northern tube. The yellow stripe for the trunk line of the U4 and U5 is on the wall.
