The Theresienwiese underground station (abbreviation of the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft : TW ) is an underground station in the Ludwigsvorstadt district of the Bavarian capital, Munich . It is located on the main route 3 of the Munich subway and is served by the U4 and U5 lines.
history
The Theresienwiese underground station was opened on March 10, 1984 as part of the main route 3 between the Westendstraße and Karlsplatz (Stachus) stations . At first only the U5 line ran here; the U4 line has been at the station since it opened on October 27, 1988.
Location and surroundings
The train station is located immediately northeast of the Theresienwiese , which gave the station its name. The railroad tracks do not follow the course of a street, so the train station is under a block between the Bavariaring and St. Pauls Platz, where the Catholic Church of St. Paul is located.
The neighboring stations are the Schwanthalerhöhe station , which is 927 meters out of town, and the Hauptbahnhof underground station, which is 711 meters into town . The city center ( Munich Karlsplatz train station ) is around 1.2 kilometers and a two-minute drive away.
Station complex
construction
The station has two tracks with a central platform. The station vault is supported by a row of columns. From the southern head of the station, a staircase leads directly to the Theresienwiese. The staircase at the north end of the platform leads to a mezzanine floor, from which two flights of stairs lead to the surface at the intersection of St.-Paul-Straße and Landwehrstraße. All stairways are equipped with at least one escalator , and an elevator connects the platform with St.-Pauls-Platz.
A special feature is the supervisory pulpit in the middle of the platform, from which the flow of passengers is controlled during the Oktoberfest . In the Munich underground network, only Fröttmaning station has such a facility.
layout
The role of the station as the most important development station for the Oktoberfest is also reflected in the station design. The station design designed by Alexander von Branca is reminiscent of a brewery cellar. The Munich city colors black and yellow dominate here. Four murals designed by Ricarda Dietz are attached to each of the two back rail walls, reminding of the attractions and rides at the Oktoberfest.
traffic
The U5 trains run here at the station every 10 minutes, and every 5 minutes during rush hour .
The U4 trains serve the station every 10 minutes until 00:45, and every 5 minutes on weekdays during rush hour. A large part of the journeys of the U4 ends at the Theresienwiese; the section between Theresienwiese and Westendstrasse is only used in the early morning and on weekdays in the morning and in the evening.
There are no opportunities to switch to other public transport.
Planning
The plans for the U9 bracket envisage expanding the station into a four-track crossing station. The existing trunk route 3 is to meet the new route from here to the Implerstrasse and Giselastrasse underground stations .
