Schwanthalerhöhe underground station (viewing direction: west)

The Schwanthalerhöhe underground station is a stop for the Munich underground lines U4 and U5 .

location

The Schwanthalerhöhe underground station is located in Munich's Schwanthalerhöhe district of the same name on Theresienhöhe near Theresienwiese .

The platform and the pedestrian tunnel run parallel to Heimeranstrasse .

At the west end there are three entrances at the intersection of Heimeranstraße / Ganghoferstraße - two of them on the eastern edge of Georg-Freundorfer-Platz . At the east end of the platform there is an access where Ligsalzstraße joins Heimeranstraße. The easternmost access is at the end of the long pedestrian tunnel, whereby the orientation of the eastern staircase had to be rotated after the former exhibition center was converted into a residential and business district and a different development function was required here.

The underground station has a branch to the Theresienwiese plant in the eastern track apron, which is equipped with a through track and two siding. On the one hand, this serves as a storage facility and, on the other hand, as a connection to the underground line of lines U3 and U6 .

history

The Schwanthalerhöhe underground station was opened on March 10, 1984 and was called "Messegelände" until 1998 when the Munich Exhibition Center moved to Riem . To this day, the graphically depicted groups of figures and the flags of different nations on the walls of the subway station remind of this . It lies mostly in the gravel of the Isar terrace and was in top-down construction built so that the fair operation could continue uninterrupted as possible.

layout

The design of the underground station was carried out by the two architects Schnetzer and Großkopf. Volker Sander was responsible for the wall graphics that show the outlines of trade fair visitors. They are still present today in the platform hall, on the mezzanine floor and in the connecting tunnel to the former exhibition entrance.

The basic color of the pillarless subway station is silver and was combined with the key color yellow and other colors (mainly turquoise and yellow-green) to create a more sober impression.
