Erdinger ring closure

The Erdinger Ringschluss is a railway project consisting of several projects, through which the rail connection of Munich Airport from eastern and southern Bavaria is to be improved.

Sub-projects

Neufahrner curve

Transfer of the Neufahrner curve over the A 92 , construction status March 2017

The Neufahrner curve was implemented to improve the airport connection from Eastern Bavaria . The approximately 2.3 km long, double-track electrified railway line connects the Munich – Regensburg railway with the Neufahrner Spange and thus enables trains to be run directly to Munich Airport. It was built in the embankment or elevated position and crosses the federal highway 92 . The connection to the existing routes was free of height. An originally planned four-track expansion of the Munich – Regensburg railway line between Freising and the Neufahrn-Nord junction was not implemented. A S-Bahn stop in Mintraching , which was discussed until 2016, was also not built.

The planning approval decision for the Neufahrner curve was issued on October 31, 2012. On April 12, 2013, the implementation and financing contract for the Neufahrner curve was signed. The construction costs were given as 83 million euros. Half of these should be borne by the federal government and the free state. Within 20 years after the line went into operation, Deutsche Bahn planned to reimburse the Free State of ten million euros from additional track fees. A lawsuit filed on December 14, 2012 against the planning approval decision was dismissed on August 29, 2013. In June 2014 the Federal Ministry of Transport announced the inclusion of the curve in the federal program according to the Municipal Transport Financing Act. This should finance 46 million of the total costs now estimated at 91 million euros. Construction began on October 27, 2014. At the end of 2018, the connecting curve was completed. The route has been on schedule since the timetable change on December 9, 2018.

Flyover structure Airport West

To the west of the Munich Airport Visitor Park S-Bahn station, the construction of a flyover is planned. This should enable the level-free merging of the S-Bahn lines 1 and 8 in the airport area leading from the west to the airport. The plan approval decision was issued in February 2016. As of August 2020, commissioning is Template: future / in 5 yearstargeted for 2028 .

Closing the gap between Erding and Airport

The existing railway line between Markt Schwaben and Erding is to be extended by a new line to Munich Airport station. Under the eastern apron of Munich Airport, the route is to continue in the tunnel and come to light again near Schwaigerloh. The above-ground route to Erding is then planned. In the Schwaigerloh area, a new station and a turning system are to be built, which will enable trains coming from Regensburg / Landshut to turn around after stopping at the airport. The previous station in Erdingen city center is to be replaced by a new station on the site of the Erding Air Base. Both S-Bahn trains from the direction of Munich and regional trains from the south-east (Walpertskirchener Spange) will stop here.

On July 24, 2015 the planning approval procedure for the 4.5 km long section between the airport and the north-western city limits of Erding was initiated. The planning approval for this section was issued by the Federal Railway Authority on April 5, 2018 . On September 5, 2018, the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 1.555 km long extension of the S-Bahn tunnel to the east, currently ending near the satellite construction of Airport Terminal 2, plus a 306-meter-long ramp structure. Completion is scheduled for 2025.

Since the end of 2009, various options for a route in the city of Erding have been publicly discussed. In May 2012, the Erdingen city council decided on the so-called northern looping of the regional train route coming from Walpertskirchen. The project was delayed until the Free State of Bavaria and the City of Erding signed a contract on August 7, 2017 to lower the line in the Erdinger area. In future, the route between the Erding S-Bahn station and Haager Strasse will be in a tunnel, while building land is to be created on the surface. The planned costs of 68 million euros will be borne by the Free State and the city, which are contributing a fixed amount of 35 million euros. The planning approval procedure for the seven-kilometer section in the Erdinger urban area was initiated in July 2020. The route to Erding is Template: future / in 5 yearsscheduled to be completed by 2029 .

Walpertskirchener clasp

With the construction of the Walpertskirchener Spange , an approx. 9.5 km long, single-track, electrified new line, the Markt Schwaben – Erding railway line is to be connected with the Munich – Simbach railway line . Regional trains are to run on it from Landshut via the airport to Mühldorf. If the Mühldorf – Freilassing railway line were to be further expanded, it could also be used to handle international long-distance traffic from Munich to Salzburg. The plan approval procedure was applied for on March 21, 2019.

Planned transport offer

After completion of all measures of the Erdinger ring closure, the following access offer was planned in 2010:

  • 20 train pairs daily: National Airport Express (ÜFEX, hourly) from Salzburg to Regensburg with stops in Mühldorf, Dorfen, Erding, airport, Freising, Moosburg and Landshut
  • 20 pairs of trains daily: Airport Express (FEX, hourly) from Mühldorf to Landshut via the airport and Freising with more stops
  • S-Bahn from Erding via the airport to Freising (15-minute intervals during rush hour, otherwise 30-minute intervals)
