MAEX
The MAEX ( MünchenAirportEXpress ) is an alternative solution to the Transrapid required by the red - green Munich city government for a fast train connection between Munich Central Station and Munich Airport .
concept
The MAEX is designed as an express S-Bahn and is to be routed from Munich Central Station via the second trunk line tunnel currently under construction on today's route of the S8 in the east of the city via the Munich East – Munich Airport railway to the airport. In addition to the two stops in the second trunk line tunnel at the main train station and Marienplatz, there will only be two stops at the Leuchtenbergring and alternately in Unterföhring and Ismaning .
For the realization of this line, in addition to the second trunk line tunnel, the four-track expansion of the Munich North Ring in the Daglfing – Johanneskirchen area is required. This is to take place in the tunnel, on the one hand to completely separate road traffic from the then increasing rail traffic by removing the level crossings in Daglfing and Englschalking and on the other hand to protect the districts from noise and to eliminate the separating effect of the railway line.
The journey time of the MAEX should be less than 25 minutes on the approx. 35 km long route between Munich main station and the airport and thus reduce the current travel time by approx. 15 minutes. Traffic is planned every 15 minutes. The total cost of the project is estimated at 860 million euros, including the cost of other measures beyond the MAEX. The pure MAEX costs are given as 625 million euros (excluding the 2nd trunk line tunnel, which is independent of this project).
Shortly after the project idea was published, Deutsche Bahn secured the trademark rights to MAEX. The city of Munich then suggested that the plans should be pursued under the name MExpress instead.
