The German federal road 388 (abbreviation: B 388 ) leads from Ismaning in the north of Munich via Erding , Pfarrkirchen and Passau to the Austrian state border at Wegscheid , but not consistently under this number. Between Pocking and Passau, the B 12 and A 3 replace the route. The B 388 is one of the few federal highways in the number range between 328 and 432 with a greater length.

history

Bundesstraße 388 emerged from Reichsstraße 388 in 1949 . First, from 1940, the line from Zichenau in the administrative district of Zichenau , which is attached to East Prussia, to Pultusk , which was renamed "Ostenburg" in 1941, was established.

In 1941, however, this route was abandoned in favor of the eastern section of today's route. However, the R 388 continued via Öpping / Rohrbach (intersection with R 341 ), Leonfelden , Freistadt ( R 95 ), Sandl , Groß Gerungs , Zwettl (intersection with R 31 , R 346 ), Neupölla , Horn (intersection with R 170 , R 343 ), Eggenburg , Schöngrabern (crossing with R 96 ), Ernstbrunn , Mistelbach , Wilfersdorf (crossing with R 116 and R 374 ), Zistersdorf and finally to Dürnkrut on the border with Slovakia . Thus were Upper Bavaria , Upper Austria and Lower Austria (then Upper Danube and Lower Danube ) opened up in their northern parts by a West-East connection.

The 174.8 km long section of the former R 388 in Upper Austria and Lower Austria to Horn (Lower Austria) is now known as Böhmerwald Straße (B 38) , with the section between Freistadt and the state border at Kollerschlag as Sternwald Straße (B 128) until 1983 was designated. From Horn (Lower Austria) to Schöngrabern , the former route of the R 388 continues through Waldviertler Strasse (B 2) and between Hollabrunn and the Slovakian border through Mistelbacher Strasse (B 40) .

In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003, the cost of the Taufkirchen bypass was given as 11.4 million euros. Between 2009 and August 1, 2017, the costs for the area B 388 to Hallbergmoos rose from 24.8 million euros (budget adjustment) by 27 percent to 31.5 million euros (costs of the road construction plan).

course

Western section (approx. 143 kilometers)

In Ismaning near Munich , the B 388 begins at the junction from the B 471 and then runs in a north-easterly direction via the Fischerhäuser district with the junction to the B 301 via Moosinning to Erding , which is tangent to the south. This is where the “ Airport Tangent East ” crosses . As a result, the B 388 leads in an easterly direction through the Erdinger Holzland to Taufkirchen , where the B 388 meets the B 15 . It continues via Velden to Vilsbiburg , where it runs for a few kilometers together with the B 299 . Via Gangkofen and Massing , which, like Velden and Vilsbiburg, are only affected, it goes into the Rottal , where Eggenfelden is reached with the B 20 and B 588 . After a few kilometers along the B 20, the B 388 continues in an easterly direction via Pfarrkirchen , Bad Birnbach , Bad Griesbach and Ruhstorf to the B 12 northeast of Pocking .

Interrupted section (approx. 26 kilometers)

The B 388 has been replaced by the B 12 and the A 3 from Pocking to Passau .

Eastern section (about 34 kilometers)

The replacement ends in the Passau district of Ilzstadt , the B 388 now runs for about 15 kilometers directly on the banks of the Danube below the steep slopes of the Bavarian Forest . From Obernzell , however, the main road rises to the heights of the southern Bavarian Forest and leads through Untergriesbach and Wegscheid to the Austrian border. Across the border you get to Freistadt on the B 38 .

Expansion planning

Taufkirchen bypass

In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003 , the Taufkirchen (Vils) bypass was classified as project BY8311 in urgent need. It was a 5 km long two-lane new building. In the last associated investment master plan - valid for the period 2011 to 2015 - this project was listed in category D “other important projects”, since it was expected to be ready for construction after 2015. A plan approval decision has been in place for this project since September 23, 2015, but a complaint has been made (as of August 2017).

Northern Passau bypass

The project B388-G050-BY - northern bypass Passau - was included for the first time in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 and classified as urgent. The cost estimate for the 8.5 km long 2- or 3-lane new route is 61.9 million euros. The planning status currently relates to a completed variant investigation, whereby the cost-benefit ratio but also the environmental relevance are rated as high. The Georgsberg tunnel in Passau was examined as a route variant, but it performed worse in comparison.

Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030

In the first ministerial draft for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030, a total of nine B 388 projects are named. These are listed in two categories:

  • New projects - Urgent Needs (VB) and Urgent Needs - Congestion Removal (VB-E)
  • New projects - further needs (WB)

Three projects are marked with an urgent need (VB); the other four do not indicate whether it is VB or VB-E. Two projects are grouped under additional requirements (WB). These are the following projects:

  • B388-G070-BY - OU Wegscheid.

The publication of the draft bill was followed by a six-week public participation. After evaluating the comments received, a revised cabinet draft was available, in which the Taufkirchen / Vils bypass was included in the urgent need. After the departmental coordination at the end of July 2016, the federal cabinet approved the plan on August 3, 2016.

Trivia

According to the Federal Trunk Road Toll Act (BFStrMG), there is currently no toll requirement for trucks on the B 388. Since July 1, 2018, federal roads for trucks over 7.5 tons have generally been subject to tolls.

For the new construction of a four-lane federal road, the following gross area requirements (line widths including ancillary areas, embankments and cuttings) are assumed:

  • without hard shoulder: 36 m in level terrain, 56 m in moving relief or lowland areas and 65 m in strongly moving relief
  • with hard shoulder: 40 m in level terrain, 60 m in moving relief or lowland area and 70 m in strongly moving relief.

The following applies to a three-lane expansion:

  • without hard shoulder: 28.5 m in level terrain, 45 m in moving relief or lowland area and 52 m in strongly moving relief
  • with hard shoulder: 32.5 m in level terrain, 49 m in moving relief or lowland area and 57 m in strongly moving relief.

For a two-lane federal road, the values ​​are as follows:

  • without hard shoulder: 21 m in level terrain, 33.5 m in moving relief or lowland area and 39 m in strongly moving relief
  • with hard shoulder: 25 m in level terrain, 37.5 m in moving relief or lowland area and 44 m in strongly moving relief.
