Pułtusk ( German Pultusk , older Poltow , 1941-1945 Ostenburg ) is a town with 19,000 inhabitants in central Poland and at the same time the seat of a town and country municipality . It is located 56 km north of Warsaw and is the county seat of the powiat Pułtuski in the Masovian Voivodeship .

The city is located at the confluence of the Narew and Rozoga rivers .
history
Pułtusk was the scene of two major battles, during the Great Northern War in 1703 ( First Battle of Pultusk ) and during the Napoleonic Wars in 1806 ( Second Battle of Pultusk ). The city was also known by a large meteor shower , which fell there on 30 January. 1868 Before the Second World War, 6,000 Jews lived in the city, about half of the population, the majority of whom fled to the Soviet Union in 1939. Pułtusk was annexed by the Germans and added to the Zichenau district. In the Second World War, the city was 85% destroyed.
