State :

The federal road 258 (abbreviation: B 258 ) leads through the Eifel from the Mayen bypass to Aachen .

The road leads past the Nürburgring , crosses the state border of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia , crosses Monschau and ends at the Aachen- Lichtenbusch motorway junction of federal motorway 44 .

Until a few years ago, the B 258 began in Koblenz and led via Ochtendung to Mayen and then on to the route described above. The part between Koblenz and Mayen was graduated due to its proximity to the federal highway 48 .

In the urban area of Aachen, the route via Walheim , Kornelimünster , Brand , and Forst was graduated to Kaiserplatz . Since 2010, the federal road has been running from the Königsberg relay via Monschauer Strasse to the 44 federal motorway .

Special

B 258 on Belgian territory (speed limit 90 km / h with notice "Belgium")

Between Monschau and Roetgen , the B 258 runs for around three kilometers across Belgian territory . From this road there is no connection to the Belgian road network. On this section is the Fringshaus ( Lage ), which belongs to the Belgian Raeren ( post code 4730), but telecommunications to the German local network Roetgen ( code 02471).

In Roetgen, the B 258 crosses the Vennbahnradweg three times on the former tracks of the Vennbahn , which was shut down in 1989 and is part of the RAVeL network and Belgian national territory. This is partially indicated by signs and can be recognized by the boundary stones . As a result, one crosses a border six times in the course of the federal road from a few hundred meters . In the past, this has caused jurisdiction problems in the event of accidents on Belgian territory. In this case, the Belgian emergency services had to move from Eupen, 14 km away . This only became obsolete through an administrative assistance agreement between Belgium and Germany. The Belgian public prosecutor's office and the court in Eupen remain competent. This can be due to different traffic regulations, u. a. the speed limit of 90 instead of 100 km / h outside the built-up area, alcohol limits, as well as regulations for people under 18 years of age, for example with accompanying driving or with regard to the driving license for light motorcycles , lead to unpleasant surprises. In the past, the Belgian right of way rule was one of these differences, but it has been abolished since March 2007. In civil law disputes, since Belgian law is applied, drivers based in Germany may incur higher costs with regard to rental cars, loss of use, expert fees or legal fees.

Because of its straight, steep inclines, the B 258 near Roetgen is also called the Himmelsleiter . A distinction is made between the Large Himmelsleiter between the Königsberg and Roetgen relays and the Small Himmelsleiter between Roetgen and Fringshaus. This distinction, however, has only been made by the press in recent years. In the vernacular, only the route between Relais Königsberg and Roetgen Himmelsleiter is mentioned.
