history
In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the place was the center of a rule , later the Grafschaft Schleiden , which was itself part of the Duchy of Luxembourg , from 1441/43 within the framework of the Netherlands (first under the Burgundians, then the Habsburgs). Remained after the division of the Netherlandsthe Duchy of Luxembourg with Schleiden at the Spanish line of the Habsburgs . After the War of the Spanish Succession , the Duchy of Luxembourg, still with Schleiden, came to the Austrian line of the House of Habsburg . When revolutionary France conquered the Austrian Netherlands in 1794/95 , the Duchy of Luxembourg was soon divided into the three departments of Forêts , Sambre-et-Meuse and Ourthe . Schleiden came to the Département Ourthe (main town Liège , fr. Liège ). At the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the former Luxembourg territories east of the Our , Sauer and Moselle rivers were assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia . Schleiden thus became "Prussian" and in 1871 part of the German Empire .
The small town of Schleiden has produced two important humanists : Johannes Sleidanus and Johannes Sturm , also known as Ioannes Sturmius.
In 1944 the battle of Wahlerscheid took place nearby .

in accordance with the law for the reorganization of the municipalities and districts of the reorganization area Aachen of December 14, 1971 (GV. NW. p. 414). The area north of the Urfttalsperre , which previously belonged to Heimbach, was also incorporated .

Coat of arms and banner
The city of Schleiden was granted permission to use a coat of arms, a seal and a banner with a certificate from the district president in Cologne dated August 19, 1976.
Blazon : "With nine gold lilies sprinkled a rightward facing gelbbekrönten, zweigeschwänzten, rotbezungten, white lions border." | |
Reasons for the coat of arms: The basic color green is taken from the coat of arms of the former city of Gemünd. The lion shown comes from the former coat of arms of Schleiden. He was already the heraldic animal of the rule (since 1602 county) Schleiden. The nine lilies in the green field represent the cities of Gemünd and Schleiden, the Harperscheid office and the municipalities of Broich, Bronsfeld, Dreiborn, Harperscheid, Oberhausen and Schöneseiffen in the city arms. |
The banner is green and shows the coat of arms in the banner field as described in paragraph 2 of the main statute, but free without a shield.

Olef Valley Railway
At the station Schleiden who held Oleftalbahn ( Kall - Hellenthal ); regular passenger traffic was discontinued in 1981 by the Deutsche Bundesbahn . Because of the Eifel National Park , which was newly established in 2004 , the state of North Rhine-Westphalia supported tourism through a two-year program for passenger transport in the excursion season on Sundays and public holidays. If the journeys ended in 2004 in the Gemünd district, they continued to Schleiden in 2005. The regional rail transport was organized by the Rhein-Sieg transport association , and Rurtalbahn GmbH was the operator. Regular traffic ended on October 16, 2005. Since 2006, the transport has been privately operated as a museum railway in the summer season, with the 2008 season from the Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn . As of 2010, the trains will run to the Hellenthal terminus again , using a historic MAN rail bus.
Until 1997 there was regular freight traffic via Schleiden to Hellenthal, then only military traffic to Schleiden-Höddelbusch (tank loading ramp). The last troop shipments took place there in winter 2002 with diesel and steam locomotives from a private railway. Belgium gave up the Vogelsang military training area on January 1, 2006. The area on the Dreiborn plateau was used for civil purposes (documentation center and hiking area).
