Embken is a district of the city of Nideggen in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

Embken is located on the edge of the Zülpicher Börde in the middle of the Devonian shell limestone peaks with an extremely rare flora on the Neffelbach . The place is at around 180 m to 229  m above sea level. NHN .

Neighboring towns are Wollersheim , Muldenau , Ginnick (municipality of Vettweiß ) and Juntersdorf (city of Zülpich ).

history

Many archaeological finds from the Roman and Franconian times suggest an early settlement. At the end of the Middle Ages , Embken was the richest place in Amt Nideggen with 25  fiefdoms . In the direction of Gödersheim Castle , ten matron stones donated to the Matronae Veteranehae were found.

Embken emerged from a Merovingian royal estate that came to the Maria Abbey in the Capitol in Cologne via Plectrudis , Pippin's wife .

On January 1, 1972, Embken was incorporated into the new town of Nideggen. After the judgment of the Higher Administrative Court of August 4, 1972, Embken remained with Nideggen, which was temporarily revoked the designation city .

church

In the parish church of St. Agatha, which dates back to the 16th century, a relic of St. Urbanus, the patron saint of winegrowers, is kept. Embken belongs to the Archdiocese of Cologne .

In 1866 there was a Jewish community in Embken with its own prayer room, and there is still a Jewish cemetery outside the village (near Nicksmühle ).

economy

Embken used to be a rich wine-growing region. The vines grew on the gently rising slopes of the Eifel .

There is an industrial park on the outskirts of Embken . Due to the large estates , the place has retained its rural character.

traffic

From 1911 to 1957 the Düren Kreisbahn (DKB) small railway ran from Düren-Distelrath via Nörvenich and Zülpich Stadt to Embken. Today the DKB buses ensure local public transport.

The place can be reached from Wollersheim, Thum ( Kreuzau ) and Zülpich via a well-developed road network.

Worth seeing

The watermill Embken ( Nick's Mill ) from the 16th century has the largest still functioning water wheel in the region. The mill can be visited. Grain is still ground there.
