Wollersheim is a district of Nideggen in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

Wollersheim is on the northern edge of the Eifel . The Zülpicher Börde borders directly on the outskirts . There is a geological and a botanical peculiarity around Wollersheim, the shell limestone dome , which is overgrown with numerous rare species of limestone drift.

The Neffelbach rises southwest of the village .

Embken , Langendorf (town of Zülpich ), Eppenich (town of Zülpich), Vlatten (town of Heimbach ) and Berg-Thuir border on Wollersheim .

history

An immense number of archaeological finds suggests early settlement. In 1931/32 six Roman pottery kilns and several wells made of sandstone were excavated in the headwaters of the Neffelbach . Even the name of a pottery owner has been preserved. The name Verecundus is written on a pottery shard from the 2nd century . On the nearby Pützberg and near Gödersheim Castle , Roman skeleton graves and matron stones from Roman times were found, which were dedicated to the Matronae Veteranehae .

The Wollersheimer Heide is considered to be the site of the Battle of Zülpich in 496 between the Franks under Clovis I and the Alemanni , although some historians doubt this today: Tulbiac , mentioned by Gregor von Tours , may have been located to the south because it is so far north simply no Alemanni existed.

Wollersheim was first mentioned in a document in 1231 as Wolrisheim . The name is traced back to the holy Willibrord . As early as 1184 there is evidence of a women's courtyard for the St. Maria Abbey in Cologne .

In 1388, the French King Charles VI. and the duke of Jülich the Wollersheim peace in town .

On January 1, 1972, Wollersheim was incorporated into the new town of Nideggen. After the judgment of the Higher Administrative Court on August 4, 1972, Wollersheim remained near Nideggen, which was temporarily denied the city name .

church

The place has two churches , the old church , the oldest parts of which date from the 11th century, and the new church from 1900 to 1903.

In 1958 the old church was to be demolished and taken to the Kommern open-air museum . The residents resisted this. The old church is one of the oldest sacred buildings in the Düren district.

Wollersheim belongs to the Archdiocese of Cologne .

economy

A lot of Eifel brewing barley is grown around Wollersheim . From 1791 to 1987 the Cramer Brewery brewed beer in Wollersheim.
