Kommern is located on the north-western edge of the Eifel and is a district of the city of Mechernich in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
General
The place is known for its closed half-timbered ensemble in the historic town center. Tourist attractions are also the Rhenish Open Air Museum and the Rhineland Wildlife Park . For centuries, Kommern was an important center of lead and silver mining. This was administered by the castle Kommern , which is still worth seeing today , a seat of the Dukes of Arenberg . From the beginning of the 1950s to the mid-1970s it housed a boarding school for girls.
history
On July 1, 1969, Kommern was incorporated into Veytal .
Before this incorporation, Kommern was an independent municipality, which took on its present form under the long-time municipal director Norbert Leduc (in office from 1953 to 1969): In 1958, Kommern was chosen as the location of the Rhenish Open-Air Museum. Kommern has been a climatic health resort since the 1960s . The Mühlensee also dates from this time . He dams the Bleibach in the form of a small dam. The lead sludge that the stream brings with it from the lead mine in which it rises can thus settle harmlessly. Before that, the stream flooded the meadows on its banks in spring, which is why cattle regularly fell ill with the lead content of the grass.
On January 1, 1972, the municipality of Veytal (with the exception of the district Schwerfen, which came to the city of Zülpich ) was incorporated into the municipality (now the city) of Mechernich .
In 1972 the North Rhine-Westphalia State Horticultural Show took place in Kommern . The Mühlental and the Mühlensee were integrated.
