Dreimühlen is a district of Mechernich in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Euskirchen .

geography

The village is east of Weyer and south of Eiserfey .

The federal highway 477 runs through the village , the next motorway junction of the federal highway 1 is the junction 113 Nettersheim .

The Hauserbach flows through Dreimühlen, which flows into the Veybach in Eiserfey and which also drove the mills that are now closed. The Hauserbach used to be called Feybach .

The freely accessible, prehistoric Kakushöhle is located in Dreimühlen . It is a fauna and flora habitat of the European Community and an important winter home for bats . As early as 1932, the 5-hectare Kartstein area was designated a nature reserve .

history

The Kakus Cave has already been visited by Neanderthals . The cave has been visited again and again since the Stone Age, also in ancient times and still in the Middle Ages. A section wall made the plateau above the cave probably a late Roman refuge, but it can also be used in the Latène and Carolingian times.

The place name Dreimühlen is not derived from the fact that there were exactly three mills here centuries ago. The oldest known mention of the name is "Drynmöllen" and comes from a document from the Steinfeld Abbey from 1502.

There are several historic watermills in and around the place . The oldest is the Giesen mill , originally a ban mill for the places Weyer (partially), Harzheim and Pesch . It is no longer in operation today, but it is still functional. In Dreimühlen and Eiserfey a total of 16 mill wheels were operated over a distance of only two kilometers.
