history

In 1963 the then municipality of Kommern bought 98 hectares of land. The largest part was forest, but the Kommern-Süd building area was created on around 34 hectares. The first house was built in June 1964 at break no. In a meeting in April 1965, the Kommern municipal council decided to divide the names of the residential streets into 2 groups. The first group was named after birds and the second after trees. The continuous road from Kommern to Katzvey kept its name Becherhoferweg and the ring north of it was named Am Bruch after the old field name . In order to prevent the military training area in the Schavener Heide from being enlarged up to the new development area, the Rhineland High Game Protection Park was built in 1966. The opening ceremony took place on April 15, 1967. After the development of Kommern-Süd and the establishment of the game reserve, Katzvey received the first developed road in the direction of Kommern in 1967. In November 1966 the tennis club Blau-Gold Kommern was founded. In the Mohrenkopf forest area to the south, the tennis club built a tennis facility with 3 playing fields with grants from the municipality and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

On the way from Kommern to Kommern-Süd lies the “Becherkapelle” in the middle of the fields. It was donated by Jakob Eschweiler (1894-1965) in 1965. The studied theologian was director of the Diocesan Museum in Cologne and last lived in Burgfey. The chapel is dedicated to the "Sorrowful Mother" and was designed by the Munich architect Theodor Strauss. The Bauhaus-style building consists of natural stone and concrete.

On July 1, 1969, in the first part of the municipal reorganization, the municipality of Kommern was merged with the municipalities of Antweiler , Lessenich-Rißdorf , Obergartzem , Satzvey-Firmenich , Schwerfen , Wachendorf and Weiler am Berge to form the new municipality of Veytal . Since the town hall in the district of Kommern had become too small for the administration of the new municipality, the "high-rise buildings" in Ahornweg were rented to set up the administration there. The way from Kommern to Kommern-Süd was long and the connection to the public transport network was not completed. But it was only a temporary solution.

On January 1, 1972, the municipality Veytal was largely united with the municipality (from July 23, 1975 city) Mechernich as part of the second part of the municipal reorganization.

The hope of attracting a large number of tourists to Kommern-Süd was not fulfilled. In 1974 the Hotel Falkenhorst became a retirement and nursing home. After many houses had originally been built as weekend or holiday homes, the settlement of many young families with children in 1992 made it necessary to build a kindergarten, the soccer field kids . The development of further building plots in the direction of Kommern began in 2018. 59 single-family houses are to be built on the Großer and Kleine Bruch. A connection to Mechernich-Nord is guaranteed by a new road and a roundabout at the exit of Kommern-Süd. The new streets are on the "tree side" of the district and are then called Douglasienweg and Zedernweg. There is also Wolfgang-Müller-Strasse. It was made in honor of StD. Wolfgang Müller († 2017), who taught English and French at the Turmhofgymnasium from 1964 to 1986. He is considered to be the father of the town twinning Mechernich - Nyons. Another street is named Peter Milz († 2011). He lived on Becherhofer Weg and managed the area that has now been declared building land.
