Holzheim is a place in the Eifel that belongs to the city of Mechernich in the Euskirchen district.

geography

Holzheim is an elongated street village and is located about 3 km southeast of Mechernich. The Krebsbach rises near the village and already flows into the Veybach in the neighboring village of Breitenbenden .

history

The first mention of Holzheim as holzheym can be found in the so-called Prümer Urbar , which dates from 893. The origins of Holzheim are likely to be earlier. Roman settlement traces - u. a. three Roman graves, Roman villa in the direction of Breitenbenden - discovered.

The Roman Eifel aqueduct runs past the place not far away.

The parish church is dedicated to the holy bishop and martyr Lambert . Today's church was consecrated in 1845 after the previous building, which had become too small, had been demolished except for the west tower, which probably dates from the Middle Ages and has been preserved. The architect Johann Peter Cremer created the design for the new building from 1844 .

On July 1, 1969, Holzheim was incorporated into Mechernich.
