Hansgerd Hellenkemper

Hansgerd Hellenkemper (born September 17, 1945 in Brühl ) is a German Byzantinist , historical geographer , ground monument curator and former director of the Roman-Germanic Museum of the city of Cologne.

Life

Hansgerd Hellenkemper studied Ancient History , Historical Geography , Classical Archeology and Oriental Art History at the Universities of Bonn and Vienna and was born in Bonn in 1971 under Ernst Kirsten with a dissertation on Castles of the Crusader Period in the County of Edessa and in the Kingdom of Lesser Armenia . Studies on the historical settlement geography of Southeast Asia Minor for Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1978 he was first deputy director, then from 1980 to 2010 director of the Roman-Germanic Museum of the City of Cologne and thus successor to founding director Hugo Borger . At the same time, Hellenkemper had been head of the Archaeological Monument Preservation of the City of Cologne since 1994 and was therefore responsible for all finds and excavations in the Cologne city area, except for the area of ​​the archaeological zone in the city center (Praetorium, Mikveh, Ubiermonument etc.), which is subordinate to the Department of Culture. In addition, Hellenkemper is honorary professor for Byzantine archeology at the University of Cologne .

Hansgerd Hellenkemper was married to the classical archaeologist Gisela Hellenkemper Salies , who died in 1999, and lives in Bonn.
