Friedrich Hild (Byzantinist)

Friedrich Hild (* 1941 ) is an Austrian Byzantinist .

Friedrich Hild studied Classical Philology , Ancient History , Numismatics and Byzantine Studies at the University of Vienna from 1960 to 1968 . After graduating as Dr. phil. In Ancient History, he was a research assistant at the research project Tabula Imperii Byzantini (TIB) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences from 1969 on the historical geography of the Byzantine Empire . From 1977 to 1987 he was deputy chairman of the TIB. From 1976 to 1986 he was secretary and treasurer, from 1987 to 1996 treasurer of the Austrian Byzantine Society . Since his retirement in 2007 he has been working as a volunteer scientist at the TIB.

Hild's main research interests are ancient and Byzantine history, archeology in Anatolia , historical geography and cartography of the Mediterranean .
