Voißel is a place on the northern edge of the Eifel , which belongs to the city of Mechernich in the Euskirchen district. It lies on the edge of the Eifel National Park . The district road 27 from Bleibuir to Wallenthalerhöhe leads through the village .

history

The village name Voißel has had many different spellings over the years:

  • 1493, Foissel
  • 1546, Fosselen
  • 1646, Vossel
  • 1791, Voihsel
  • and since about 1955 the name “Voißel” has been written.

The origin of the name has not yet been clearly established and there are currently two vague assumptions:

  • Fossa = ditch (based on the ditch in which the village is located)
  • Vos = fox (fox enclosure, "the foxes literally said good night here")

Old village school

Former single-room village school on Ritterstraße (K27) with the distinctive inscription "God and the King", which is now used as a residential building.

Bike paths

The Eifel-Höhen-Route long-distance cycle path runs through the village and runs as a circular route around and through the Eifel National Park .
