Alfred Maria Willner (born July 11, 1859 in Vienna , Austrian Empire , † October 27, 1929 in Vienna) was an Austrian journalist , composer and librettist .

Life

Alfred Maria Willner studied law at the University of Vienna , where he also received his doctorate. He initially worked as a columnist for newspapers, mainly for the Wiener Salonblatt founded by Viktor Silberer in 1869 . He also worked as a ballet composer at the Vienna Court Opera and later as a librettist. He was one of the most important librettists of the so-called silver operetta era .

In accordance with the contractual obligation towards him, Alexandrine von Schönerer and others, Johann Strauss (son) created the operetta The Goddess of Reason . It was premiered on March 13, 1897 at the Theater an der Wien .

His grave is in the urn grove of the Simmering fire hall (Department MR, Group 164, No. 3).
