The Simmering fire hall (also called Simmering crematorium) is a crematorium with an attached urn cemetery in the 11th district of Simmering in Vienna . It was opened on December 17, 1922 as the first Austrian crematorium.

The advocates of cremation , especially the liberally oriented cremation association Die Flamme , have been campaigning for the construction of crematoria in Austria since the end of the 19th century. On April 15, 1904, the workers' branch of the Die Flamme association was founded. On October 24, 1906, municipal councilor Friedrich Allmeder applied for permission to cremate in Vienna for the first time, but the relevant applications were always rejected by the authorities. In 1921, the Vienna City Council , now dominated by social democrats , under Mayor Jakob Reumann, approved the construction of a crematorium in Vienna as part of its social democratic-oriented local policy (“ Red Vienna ”). The original plan was to build the facility on the area of the abandoned Sankt Marxer Friedhof , but the decision was made in favor of the former garden of the Neugebauten Castle , which is located between the castle and Simmeringer Hauptstraße and is also in the immediate vicinity of the Vienna Central Cemetery . A competition for the design of the fire hall as part of the seventh expansion of the central cemetery was won by Josef Hoffmann , but the third-placed design by Clemens Holzmeister was chosen because he knew how to best integrate the existing architecture of the palace garden into the project.

Mayor Jakob Reumann opened the fire hall as the first Austrian crematorium on December 17, 1922 , although a motion brought in by the Christian Social Minister Richard Schmitz the day before was supposed to prevent this. This was followed by a lawsuit against Reumann at the Constitutional Court , which finally decided in 1924 in favor of the fire hall. The first cremation took place on January 17, 1923.

As early as the 1920s and 1930s, the first extensions, conversions and additions were made, as there was a significant increase in the number of cremations. During the Battle of Vienna in April 1945, both the crematorium and the urn grove were hit by bombs and badly damaged. The crematorium could only start operating again after about a year. From 1967 to 1969 the plant was expanded according to plans by Holzmeister. In the 1980s, the cremation ovens, which had previously run on coke and gas, were replaced by electric ones. In 2008 a new filter system and a lift for barrier-free access were installed. Since May 2013, the electric ovens have been exchanged for gas-powered cremation ovens. This conversion should be completed in 2019.

During the renovation in 2008, the heating system was redesigned so that the waste heat could be used to heat the fire hall. In 2011 it became known that in addition to conventional gas heating, waste heat from the crematorium should also be used to heat the neighboring headquarters of Friedhöfe Wien GmbH, which was still under construction at the time . Some media also erroneously reported that the fire hall was connected to the district heating network of the City of Vienna.

When the Wiener Städtische Friedhöfe was spun off from the municipal department 43 at the beginning of 2008 and became Friedhöfe Wien GmbH as a subsidiary of Wiener Stadtwerke , the fire hall Simmering came to the also newly founded Krematorium Wien GmbH, which belongs to the Stadtwerke . The urn grove is managed by Friedhöfe Wien GmbH . The Simmering fire hall and the urn grove have a total area of over 215,000 m². Over 240,000 urns are buried in the 46,279 grave sites.

Since cremation has become increasingly popular in Vienna, the fire hall is to be expanded. The extension, designed by the winner of an architecture competition , should be completed by 2022.Template: future / in 2 years

The area of the fire hall and the urn grove roughly corresponds to the southern palace garden ( Oberer Baumgarten ) of the Neugebauten Palace and has been extended by a narrow strip of land in the entrance area. Parts of the enclosure wall with their characteristic dovetail crenellations as well as the ten towers and the building of the former waterworks are still building fabric from the time it was used as a castle garden and were adapted in the course of the construction of the crematorium. The former enclosure of the inner pleasure garden and its corner towers no longer existed at this time.

An avenue leading to the main entrance of the fire hall is located on Simmeringer Hauptstrasse, diagonally opposite the main portal of the central cemetery. In front of the historic enclosure wall is an outer entrance area with a small porter building. Two entrances leading past the former waterworks, which functioned as a gate, lead to the arcade courtyard, at the end of which is the main building with the crematorium, designed by Clemens Holzmeister. The building, completed in 1922, has an expressionist style with oriental influences. From 1965 to 1969 - again under Holzmeister - some extensions and conversions were made, including new ceremonial halls and the oil paintings designed by Anton Kolig in 1927 ( Life and Chronos ) were moved to the dome room. In the 1980s, renovation work was carried out by the architect Christof Riccabona .

In the middle of the courtyard-like forecourt of the crematorium is the monumental urn grave of Jakob Reumann, who was cremated and buried here in 1925 - just a few years after he had enforced the construction of the fire hall and finally opened it. The two long sides that extend from the crematorium and delimit the courtyard are designed as pointed arches with columbarium niches .

The majority of the graves are laid out in the urn grove as earth graves, which are grouped in eight sections in a ring. The oldest graves are in the so-called oak grove . Urn niches are located in the arcades, on the inside of the surrounding wall and in one of the ten towers.

The oak grove consisting of 50 pedunculate oaks is located near the arcades and is a natural monument . It was probably laid out in the course of the construction of the Neugebauten Castle and its gardens and described in the Topographia Austriae in 1649 .

Electric cramatorium ovens

The three crematorium ovens are located in the basement of the building, directly below the entrance hall. Currently (as of 2017), more than 6500 cremations are carried out annually with two electric ovens and one heated by natural gas.

The system is certified according to EN ISO 14001: 2004 and is regularly checked by TÜV Austria. A modern filter system removes toxic substances and fine dust from the combustion gases.
