Helene Scheu-Riesz

Helene Scheu-Riesz (born September 18, 1880 in Olmütz , Austria-Hungary ; died January 8, 1970 in Vienna ) was an Austrian poet , narrator , translator , founder and editor of Sesam Verlag.

Life

Her parents were of Jewish origin and ran a wine trade in Olomouc. She attended the first girls' high school in Vienna, founded in 1892, and then studied English and philosophy at the University of Vienna .

In 1904 she married Gustav Scheu (1875–1935), a lawyer, for the Social Democrats 1918–1923 mandate in Vienna's local politics. The couple had two children: in 1905 they had their son Friedrich Scheu († 1985), 1954–1972 foreign policy editor of the Wiener Arbeiter-Zeitung and book author, born 1912 daughter Elisabeth († 2011), who after two years of studying architecture in Vienna at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) finished her studies and became a well-known architect in the USA. With her husband Winston Close, she ran the architecture firm Close Associates in Minneapolis.

In 1912/1913 Gustav Scheu had the villa, known in architectural history as Haus Scheu , 13 , Larochegasse 3, built according to a design by Adolf Loos , where the couple then lived. Helene Scheu-Riesz dealt with child education (collaboration with Eugenie Schwarzwald ) and was committed to the Austrian women's movement. She ran a salon in Larochegasse where artists such as Alban Berg , Oskar Kokoschka and Loos frequented.

On February 12, 1934, the Social Democratic Party was banned by the Dollfuss dictatorship government . In 1937 Scheu-Riesz, who had become a widow in 1935, emigrated to the USA, where she continued to run the Sesam Verlag, which she founded in Vienna, and founded the Island Press. In 1954 Scheu-Riesz returned to Vienna.

Scheu-Riesz's urn was buried in 1970 in the urn grove of the Simmering fire hall in Vienna next to that of her husband Gustav Scheu (buried March 18, 1935) (Department 8, Ring 3, Group 1, No. 15). The urns of son Friedrich Scheu (1905–1985) and his wife Herta (September 10, 1912–1995) were buried in the same tomb.

Act

Scheu-Riesz wrote feuilletons for the Neue Freie Presse , published children's books from 1910 and, together with other women, including Eugenie Hoffmann, had the idea of ​​bringing out the best children's books in world literature at low prices in their own publishing house. In 1923, the self-founded Sesam Verlag published the classic collection of Kleine Sesame books , the illustrations of which were designed by graduates of Franz Cizek's “youth art class ” at the School of Applied Arts. Scheu-Riesz wrote novels, fairy tale books, essays, puppet and Christmas games and translated a. a. Sonnets by EB Browning and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland .
