Matthias Eldersch (born February 24, 1869 in Brno in Moravia , † April 20, 1931 in Vienna ) was a social democratic Austrian politician ( SDAPÖ ).

Life

After attending elementary school and community school, Eldersch learned the trade of a weaver . From 1896 he was an accountant and secretary of the Brno District Health Insurance Fund.

From 1901 to 1911 he was a member of the Reichsrat . In 1911 he became Reich Commissioner for the health insurance companies . From March 4, 1919 to October 1, 1920 he was a member of the Constituent National Assembly . From October 17, 1919 to July 7, 1920, he was elected by the National Assembly, and he was State Secretary (= Minister) for the Interior and Education in the Renner III state government . He concentrated his political activities on the expansion of social laws and health insurance. He also promoted the construction of workers' libraries .

From November 10, 1920 until his death, Eldersch was an opposition member of the National Council , and in 1930/1931 also President of the National Council . He was also a member of the Vienna City Council from 1919 to 1923 . From 1922 to 1925 he was president and director of the Hammerbrotwerke and member of the board of directors of the workers' bank .

Elderschplatz in Vienna's 2nd district was named after Matthias Eldersch in 1933 and again after the dictatorship in 1947 . His honorary grave (Department ML, Group 19, Number 1 G) is in the urn grove of the Simmering fire hall in Vienna.
