Josef "Beppo" Afritsch (born March 13, 1901 in Graz , † August 25, 1964 in Vienna ) was an Austrian garden technician and social democratic politician . From 1959 to 1963 he was Federal Minister of the Interior ( SPÖ ).

Life path

Afritsch was a son of the founder of Kinderfreunde Austria , Anton Afritsch . His brother Viktor (1906-1967) was a well-known actor. Afritsch's training consisted of elementary school, community school and a three-year visit to the horticultural middle school in Eisgrub in South Moravia . In 1923 he joined the Vienna City Garden Administration. Until his arrest and discharge from civil service in 1942, he organized the official plant protection service there.

After the bloody events of 1934 in connection with the Austrian Civil War , he organized the relief operation of the “Society of Friends” in Vienna until 1938 for the victims of the February fighting.

Josef Afritsch was the one with union funds Bruno Kreisky the ticket for the official inaugural flight concerned Lufthansa from Vienna to Berlin on 21 September 1938th From there the future chancellor traveled on to his eight-year exile in Sweden.

After his arrest, he spent ten months in jail and two years in prison.

From 1945 to 1959 he was a member of the Vienna City Council and a member of the Vienna State Parliament . In 1946 he was formally elected to the City Councilor for General Administrative Affairs, an office he had held since 1945.

In 1951 he became the city gardening director, but at the same time he was given leave of absence in order to be able to carry out his city council office.

From July 16, 1959 to March 27, 1963, Josef Afritsch was Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Austria . He originally served under Federal Chancellor Julius Raab and from 1961 under Federal Chancellor Alfons Gorbach . Both belonged to the ÖVP.

Finally, Afritsch became government commissioner for the Vienna International Garden Show which was held from April 16 to October 11, 1964 in the Danube Park . He was a member of the National Council from December 14, 1962 until his unexpected death on August 25, 1964 .

Josef Afritsch was given an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (14C-23).

Honors

In 1957 he received the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria .

In his memory, the cooperative residential complex built between 1963 and 1965 in the 13th district, Elisabethallee 81–95, Josef Afritsch residential complex was named. In 1965 the architecturally interesting guesthouse of Volkshilfe am Hörndlwald , built between 1949 and 1953 , on Joseph-Lister-Gasse in Hietzing , also in Vienna's 13th district, was named Josef-Afritsch-Heim . It is also known as the Hörndlwald International Cultural Center . At the end of 2010, the City of Vienna took over the building and usage rights. The Afritsch home was demolished in 2013.

Josef Afritsch was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit on November 9, 1960 .

On March 17, 1961, he was awarded the Citizenship Certificate of the City of Vienna (→ List of Honorary Citizens of the City of Vienna ).

In 1962 he received the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold on ribbon for services to the Republic of Austria .

At the International Garden Show in 1964, on the occasion of the opening of the cut rose show by Mayor Franz Jonas on July 9, 1964, a rose named after "Minister Afritsch" was presented to the public.
