Franz Löschnak

Franz Löschnak (born March 4, 1940 in Vienna ) is an Austrian lawyer and politician of the SPÖ . From 1987 to 1989 he was Minister of Health in the Federal Government of Vranitzky II and then Minister of the Interior in the Federal Government of Vranitzky II, III and IV until 1995 . In the latter, however, he was replaced by Caspar Eine after six months .

Life

After graduating from Realgymnasium in 1958, he studied law at the University of Vienna , where Franz Löschnak received his "Dr. iur." PhD.

In 1959 he joined the community of Vienna. From 1964 he worked there at the municipal department for general personnel matters, from 1971 to 1977 as its head. In 1977 he became head of human resources and administrative organization for the municipality of Vienna. He received the title of Senate Council in 1973.

Since 1989 Löschnak was deputy party chairman of the SPÖ. For this party he was also a member of the National Council :

  • February 7, 1981-31. May 1983 (XVth – XVIth legislative period)
  • November 7, 1994-14. December 1994 (XIX GP)
  • April 26, 1995-28. October 1999 (XIXth - XXth GP)

He also held several offices in the Austrian federal government :

  • State Secretary in the Federal Chancellery (June 8, 1977– December 17, 1985)
  • Federal Minister in the Federal Chancellery (December 17, 1985– March 31, 1987)
  • Federal Minister for Health and Public Service (April 1, 1987– February 2, 1989)
  • Federal Minister of the Interior (February 2, 1989– April 6, 1995)

Franz Löschnak was President of the ASKÖ (1988–2005) and President of the Federal Sports Organization (1995–2007).

During his tenure as minister of the interior, among other things, the use of adhesive tape to gag prisoners was introduced, which came into the limelight years later in the Marcus Omofuma case .
