The Austrian federal government Kreisky IV was formed after the National Council election on May 6, 1979 , which confirmed the absolute SPÖ mandate majority won in 1971 for the second and last time. It should have existed for a total of eleven and a half years, a record that has not yet been exceeded. At the end of his term of office, Bruno Kreisky had served as Federal Chancellor for 13 years , which was also a record.

Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger appointed the Kreisky IV cabinet, which had only minor changes compared to the Kreisky III cabinet, on June 5, 1979 . The deep rift between the Chancellor and his Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance, Hannes Androsch , which was becoming virulent , led, at Kreisky's request, to Androsch's departure from the government in early 1981. He was succeeded as Vice Chancellor by Minister of Education Fred Sinowatz (who succeeded Kreisky as Chancellor). The Kreisky IV cabinet resigned on the evening of the next National Council election, on April 24, 1983 , and was entrusted with the continuation of business by the Federal President until May 24, 1983 (when Sinowatz took office ).
