The Austrian federal government Sinowatz , an SPÖ- FPÖ coalition after 13 years of SPÖ sole government , was formed after the National Council election on April 24, 1983 and was in office, appointed by Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger , from May 24, 1983 to June 16, 1986, the Day of the appointment of the first cabinet under Chancellor Franz Vranitzky .

After the SPÖ no longer achieved the absolute but only the relative majority in the National Council elections in 1983, as in 1971 , 1975 and 1979 , the Kreisky IV federal government resigned on the evening of the election. SPÖ chairman Bruno Kreisky proposed Fred Sinowatz , most recently Vice Chancellor and Minister of Education, as his successor. With the FPÖ , which had already supported an SPÖ government without an absolute majority in 1970/71 (see Bundesregierung Kreisky I ), a “small coalition” was formed under FPÖ chairman Norbert Steger . The Sinowatz cabinet and the short-lived Vranitzky I cabinet that followed remained the only SPÖ-FPÖ coalition at the federal level.
