The Federal Government Schober I (June 21, 1921– January 26 , 1922) and Breisky Federal Government (January 26/27, 1922) followed the Mayr II Federal Government, elected by the National Council on June 21, 1921 with 98 of 160 votes cast , a Christian social minority cabinet, according to. The cabinet, consisting mainly of civil servants, was supported by the Christian Social Party and the Greater Germans ; the social democrats were in opposition.

On January 26, 1922, Chancellor Johann Schober submitted his immediate resignation to Federal President Michael Hainisch . This commissioned the government in accordance with Article 71 of the Constitution of 1920 with the continuation of the administration , the previous Vice Chancellor Walter Breisky was entrusted with the management of the provisional federal government . This "interim federal government" was only in office for one day, and the Schober II cabinet was elected to the National Council on January 27th .

The reason for Schober's resignation was that the Greater Germans no longer supported him after Schober had concluded the so-called Treaty of Lana with Czechoslovakia on December 16, 1921 at Lana Castle near Prague on the mutual recognition of national borders, according to the Greater Germans had renounced the Sudeten Germans' right to self-determination. The Greater German Interior Minister Leopold Waber then resigned on January 16.
