The Austrian federal government Kreisky II , a sole government of the SPÖ , was formed after the National Council election on October 10, 1971 , which gave the SPÖ an absolute majority in the mandate. Kreisky's successor as Chancellor, Fred Sinowatz , was the new Minister of Education for the first time in the government.

Federal President Franz Jonas appointed the cabinet on November 4, 1971 . Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger , who was a non-party foreign minister in the cabinet until June 23, 1974, dismissed it at Kreisky's request on October 8, 1975 , three days after an election to the National Council that had confirmed the absolute majority of the SPÖ mandate. Then the cabinet was entrusted by the Federal President with the continuation of business until October 28, 1975, when the Kreisky III federal government was appointed. ÖVP and FPÖ were in opposition.
