National Council election in Austria 1971
The National Council election on October 10, 1971 was the election for the 13th legislative period of the Republic of Austria . The party with the largest number of votes and seats was the SPÖ of Bruno Kreisky , which achieved an absolute majority. Second place went to the ÖVP of Hermann Withalm , lost the votes. The FPÖ, which ran as the top candidate with the former SS Obersturmführer Friedrich Peter , was able to win mandates despite the fact that the number of votes remained unchanged.
4,984,448 people were eligible to vote. The turnout was 91.42 (1970: 90.95).

The National Council election in 1971 was the first after the election reforms decided by the SPÖ and FPÖ. The number of MPs was increased from 165 to 183 and, in contrast to the previous system, preference was given to small parties. The reform of the electoral law can be seen as a political concession by the SPÖ minority government to the FPÖ that supports it.

consequences
After the elections, the SPÖ had an absolute majority in the Second Republic for the first time . Bruno Kreisky remained Federal Chancellor . The Kreisky II federal government began its work on November 4, 1971.
