National Council election in Austria 1953
The National Council election on February 22, 1953 was the seventh in the history of the Republic of Austria and at the same time the third after the time of National Socialism . The party with the largest number of votes was the SPÖ under Adolf Schärf , while the ÖVP under Chancellor Leopold Figl remained the party with the largest number of seats due to electoral arithmetic. The Association of Independents lost slightly, but was also the third-strongest party in its second appearance. Although the KPÖ , which ran together with the Left Socialists and the Democratic Union under the name Wahlgemeinschaft Österreichische Volksopposition, gained slight votes, it lost a mandate - also due to electoral arithmetic.
4,586,870 people were eligible to vote. The turnout was 94.15 percent (1949: 95.49 percent).
