In the 2019 National Council election, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) was the strongest party with over 37 percent of the vote, followed by the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) with just over 21% and the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) with just under 16%. While the ÖVP was able to expand its lead, the FPÖ and SPÖ lost significantly in votes.

The NEOS improved their approval slightly and came to 8.1%. The Peter Pilz list failed to recover with less than 2 percent. The Greens , who left the National Council in 2017, managed to return with 13.9%. All other parties that took part played no role with a total of 1.33% of the votes.

Government formation

On November 18, 2019, the ÖVP and the Greens started negotiations on the formation of a new government. Such constellations it has previously on countries - where and community level, but a conclusion would be a first of the Austrian policy.
