Sophie Karmasin (2013)

Sophie Karmazin (* January 5, 1967 in Vienna ) is an Austrian pollster and former non-party politician . She was Federal Minister for Families and Youth of the Republic of Austria from December 16, 2013 to December 18, 2017 (nominated by the ÖVP ) .

Life

Karmasin was born in 1967 as the daughter of Helene and Fritz Karmasin and granddaughter of Franz Karmasin . Her brother Matthias Karmasin is a communication scientist at the University of Klagenfurt . After studying psychology and business administration and working for advertising agencies and as a product manager at the detergent manufacturer Henkel , the mother of two sons joined her parents' motivational research agency , which she took over in 2006. Karmasin, who with Peter Filzmaier was still working for ORF as an analyst on the television debates prior to the 2013 National Council election , was appointed as the new minister by the ÖVP on December 12, 2013. The nomination was met with skepticism in the media because Karmasin had no political experience.

In order not to violate the incompatibility law, after her appointment as minister, Karmasin withdrew her shares in the opinion research institute Karmasin motivational research, in which she had held 85 percent, and in its subsidiary Das Österreichische Gallup Institut Dr. Karmasin GmbH to her husband. In October 2014, Michael Nitsche, managing partner of the advertising agency of the same name, took over the 85 percent stake.

In August 2017, she announced that she would be leaving politics after the National Council election . In 2018 she founded a new consulting company. At the 143rd General Assembly in July 2019, she was elected to the board of the Kreditschutzverband von 1870 .
