Joy Pamela Rendi-Wagner (born May 7, 1971 in Vienna as Joy Pamela Wagner ) is an Austrian infectiologist , epidemiologist , tropical medicine specialist and politician ( SPÖ ). Since November 24, 2018 she has been the federal party leader of the SPÖ and thus the first woman to head the Austrian social democracy.

From March 8, 2017 to December 18, 2017 she was Federal Minister for Health and Women . She has been a member of the Austrian National Council since November 9, 2017, and her party's club chairwoman there since October 8, 2018 . In the National Council election in Austria in 2019 , she was the top candidate of the SPÖ.

Life

Wagner grew up in the 10th district of Favoriten in the Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung as the daughter of a young single mother. She attended GRG 12 Erlgasse in Meidling and, after graduating from high school, studied at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna from 1989 , where she received her doctorate in 1996. While waiting for an apprenticeship position, she studied at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine , where she completed a master’s degree in Infection and Health in 1996/97 . In 1997 she obtained the "Diploma of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine", the Master of Science (MSc) at the Royal College of Physicians .

In 1998 Wagner returned to the University of Vienna and between 1998 and 2002 worked in the Department of Specific Prophylaxis and Tropical Medicine; 2002–2003 in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine in the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Spital and from 2003 to 2007 again at the Medical University of Vienna in the Department of Specific Prophylaxis and Tropical Medicine and the Center for Travel Medicine. As a project manager, Rendi-Wagner established, among other things, a network for the comprehensive epidemiological monitoring of important infectious diseases. In the course of her research, the recommended interval for tick protection vaccinations was increased from three to five years. In 2008 she completed her habilitation on “Prevention through Vaccinations” in Vienna. She then worked internationally as a scientist in the fields of infection epidemiology, vaccine prevention and travel medicine. Between 2008 and 2011 she was visiting professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at Tel Aviv University in Israel. Between 2012 and 2017 she was visiting professor at the Center for Public Health at the Medical University of Vienna. From 2011 to 2017, Rendi-Wagner took over the management of Section III, “Public Health and Medical Affairs” in the Federal Ministry of Health, was chairman of the Federal Office for Safety in Health Care (BASG) and a member of the Federal Health Commission.

After Christian Kern announced that he would run as the top candidate of the SPÖ in the European elections in May 2019 and before that he would step down from the party chairmanship in November 2018, Rendi-Wagner was designated as his successor by the SPÖ party presidency on September 22, 2018 as his preferred candidate and took over as managing director Party presidency. At the 44th ordinary federal party conference in Wels on November 24, 2018, Rendi-Wagner was elected party leader of the SPÖ with 97.81 percent of the delegate's votes as the first woman in the history of the party founded in 1888 . The new SPÖ leader named her goal as “becoming the first female Federal Chancellor of this republic”.

Even before her election as chairwoman, the protection of non-smokers was a political focus of Pamela Rendi-Wagner. In 2019, together with Gerald Loacker ( NEOS - Das Neue Österreich und Liberales Forum ) and Daniela Holzinger-Vogtenhuber ( Now - Pilz List ), she submitted the application to the National Council, which passed the law on the ban on smoking in restaurants.

On May 28, 2019, Rendi-Wagner was unanimously confirmed by the party presidium as the top candidate for the National Council election in Austria 2019 . Your party achieved the historically worst result in a National Council election with 21.18 percent (minus 5.7 percentage points).

In mid-February 2020, she announced that she wanted to ask party members the vote of confidence along with a series of questions on key issues of social democracy. The survey was completed on April 2, after which the count was suspended due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Austria . The results were announced on May 6th: With a participation of 41.3% of the members, Rendi-Wagner received 71.4% approval. She therefore announced that she would remain party leader and presented a political concept “New Solidarity for Austria”, which aims to strengthen the welfare state with a focus on health and care as well as investments in employment and tax equity.

Private

Pamela Wagner's mother was a kindergarten teacher, her father a social psychologist . She has four half brothers. Rendi-Wagner is married to Michael Rendi (* 1964), the former Austrian ambassador to Israel and former head of cabinet of the former Chancellery Minister Thomas Drozda (SPÖ), and has two daughters with him.

In November 2019, it became known that Rendi-Wagner had failed to submit her mandate for a total of 16 months and that the outstanding amounts of her party tax had now exceeded 13,000  euros . The unprecedented awareness of this information for the Social Democrats was taken as an indication of the violent displeasure within the SPÖ with the party chairman. At the end of the first half of 2019, Rendi-Wagner settled its payment obligation.
