Marilies Flemming

Marilies Flemming (born December 16, 1933 in Wiener Neustadt ) is a retired Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). As a member of the European Parliament, she appeared under the name Marialiese Flemming .

Life

Marilies Flemming graduated in Salzburg , a high school and studied law at the University of Vienna . From 1952 to 1959 she lived in Paris to study languages , briefly she studied at Cambridge University (1953 to 1954). From 1972 to 1991 she was the managing director and partner of a film production company.

From 1973 to 1987 she was a member of the Vienna State Parliament . In 1987 she became Federal Minister for the Environment, Youth and Family. Flemming had always advocated environmental issues - she was involved in the occupation of the Hainburger Au and had made a public profile as an opponent of the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant . During her tenure as minister, the Chemicals Act, the Clean Air Act and the Smog Alert Act were passed.

After the National Council election in 1990 , she returned to the government. In 1991 she resigned due to massive criticism from the opposition - when she was sworn in, she had not reported to the Incompatibility Committee that she was involved in her husband's film production company. The company had received several orders from ORF during Flemming's tenure . Ruth Feldgrill-Zankel was her successor .

From 1987 to 1993 she was President of the European Women's Union, from 1996 to 2004 a member of the European Parliament . She has been Vice President of the European Seniors Union since 2004.
