Andrea Kdolsky (born Andrea Pelucha on November 2, 1962 in Vienna ) is an Austrian specialist doctor and former politician ( ÖVP ). From January 11, 2007 to December 2, 2008, she was Minister of Health and Family.

education and profession

Andrea Pelucha attended elementary school in Vienna from 1969 to 1973. After attending the St. Ursula Realgymnasium in Vienna-Mauer , a Catholic grammar school (1973–1980), she passed the Matura in 1983 in front of the external board of examiners in Vienna. She then worked as a trainee in product management at Henkel Austria and began studying law and economics on the side. It wasn't until 1986 that Kdolsky began studying medicine at the University of Vienna , which she completed in 1993. It was in 1993 at the University of Vienna medical doctor doctorate . Before starting her general practitioner training in Eggenburg in 1994, she worked in a medical laboratory. From 1994 to 1995 she completed part of the basic medical training (cycle) and in 1996 moved to the University Clinic for Anesthesia, where she completed her training as a specialist in 2001. From 2001 to 2004, Kdolsky was an anesthesiologist at the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). During this time she completed a course in hospital management and economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business . Between 2004 and 2005 she was appointed as deputy managing director at the Federal Institute for International Education and Technology Transfer (BIB), which was later renamed Austrian Technologies . The BIB or Austrian Technologies is an association organized under private law that receives annual financial support from various ministries. The funding agreements go hand in hand with the purpose of the association and include, among other things, the support of the ministries in the preparation of trips abroad. On the other hand, some experts claim that Austrian Technologies also establishes international contacts for domestic armaments companies. In 2005, Kdolsky moved to the Lower Austrian State Clinic Holding as a regional manager , but was soon appointed medical director and remained in this position until her appointment as minister.

politics

During his studies, Kdolsky (then still Eisenmenger-Pelucha) began to be politically active in the Austrian Medical Union (ÖMU), a university fraction, and was also its chairman. Through the ÖMU, which formed the strongest group until she left the medical faculty, she was represented in the medical faculty representation.

During her time at the Vienna General Hospital, Kdolsky was chairwoman of the university teachers' union. In this function, she was particularly noticeable because she violently opposed the then government and the reform efforts of the then Science Minister Elisabeth Gehrer (ÖVP).

On January 11, 2007, she became Minister of Health and Family in the Gusenbauer cabinet .

Andrea Kdolsky caused a stir soon after taking office as Minister of Health and Family. She was repeatedly portrayed in the media as a “passionate roast pork eater” due to a misinterpreted statement. Kdolsky smoked until she took office as minister. At the Life Ball she appeared as a model.

She was criticized for visiting schools as part of her campaign for safer sex , in which she distributed condoms to students in the presence of media representatives. Your ministry then denied that it was a partisan event.

The health reform she was preparing led to fierce domestic political controversy in the first half of 2008 and was one of the main reasons why the government finally broke up. The reform had also failed.

She is a founding member of the Merkenstein Vienna Catholic Student Union in the European Cartel Association .

On August 21, 2008 she announced that she would no longer be available as minister after the 2008 National Council election .

She advocates the continued existence of smoking bars.

Kdolsky is a member of the board of the Union of European Federalists .

Private

Andrea Kdolsky is divorced twice. In her first marriage she was married to Michael Eisenmenger, a member of an old Viennese medical family known among others for Victor Eisenmenger . In his second marriage, Kdolsky was married to Richard Kdolsky, who was a long-time companion in the federal department of university teachers of the public service union . Richard Kdolsky, who completed his habilitation in mid-2007, succeeded as chairman of the university teachers' union after his wife at the time left. Shortly after her move (early 2007) to federal politics, Kdolsky divorced again in order to live with Philipp Ita , the former head of the cabinet of the then Interior Minister Prokop and now ÖBB manager.
