Elfriede Karl

Elfriede Karl (born September 14, 1933 in Salzburg ) is a retired Austrian politician ( SPÖ ).

From 1947 to 1950 Elfriede Karl completed a commercial apprenticeship . She worked as a typist in the union of construction and woodworkers (1953-1960), from 1961 she was an employee of the chamber for workers and employees .

From 1971 to 1983 she was State Secretary for Family Policy and Women's Issues under Federal Chancellor Kreisky , and in the Sinowatz government she was Federal Minister for Family, Youth and Consumer Protection (1983–1984). From 1984 to 1990 she was a member of the National Council .

She was particularly involved in women and family politics ; her time as State Secretary included the introduction of the time limit solution (1973, family and criminal law reform under Christian Broda ). In order to promote the compatibility of family and work, during her term of office as minister it was decided to extend the parental leave to two years and the possibility of sharing parental leave in partnership (1990). She also campaigned for unmarried people with children and single parents to be included in family support.
