Otto Franz Rösch (born March 24, 1917 in Vienna ; † November 3, 1995 in Vienna) was an Austrian politician of the SPÖ .

Life

Otto Rösch studied law and philosophy at the Universities of Vienna and Graz and then worked as an employee. In 1938 he joined the NSDAP ( membership number 8,595,796). He was also a member of the "Nazi soldiers' ring".

During the war he was a teacher in the NPEA / Napola Traiskirchen , an NSDAP elite school for the training of the next generation of National Socialist leaders. After the Second World War , Rösch worked at the “Heimkehrer-Hilfs- und -etreuungsstelle” - a forerunner of the Austrian Comradeship Association - and was also involved in neo-Nazi activities . He was arrested on December 8, 1947, on suspicion of belonging to the Soucek group . This group helped senior Nazis flee abroad. In Rösch's possession there was a suitcase with forged ID forms and stamps. However, Rösch was able to make credible that he had no knowledge of the contents of the suitcase and was acquitted in 1949 for lack of evidence. He later stated that the red Interior Minister Helmer had sent him to the underground group as an informant.

He began his political career in socialist youth organizations. From 1951 to 1953 he was a member of the Austrian Federal Council , from 1953 to 1959 a member of the Styrian Landtag , from 1959 to 1966 State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for National Defense , from 1966 to 1970 a member of the Lower Austrian provincial government and from 1971 to 1983 a member of the Austrian National Council . At the beginning of the Bruno Kreisky era , Rösch came into the Austrian federal government . Rösch was one of four former NSDAP members in Kreisky's first cabinet. He was Minister of the Interior from 1970 to 1977 and Federal Minister for National Defense from 1977 to 1983 . At the end of his political career, he served as President of the Pensioners' Association of Austria from 1983 to 1991.

The fact that Rösch, as minister and representative of the republic, shook hands with the terrorist Carlos after the attack in downtown Vienna - in December 1975 - at Vienna International Airport caused a stir .
