Johann Luif

Johann Luif (born July 12, 1959 in Eisenstadt ) is an Austrian officer and politician . He has been Head of the General Staff Directorate at the Federal Ministry of Defense since September 2017 and Deputy Chief of Staff since August 2018. From May 22 to June 3, 2019, he was Minister of Defense .

Life

After graduating from high school, Johann Luif graduated from the Theresian Military Academy from 1978 to 1981 , was an officer in the 12th Landwehr Trunk Regiment and subsequently completed the 12th general staff course at the National Defense Academy in Vienna in 1991.

From 1993 to 1997 he was Deputy Chief of Staff in the Burgenland Military Command . He was later transferred to the Federal Ministry for National Defense as the main head of the armaments planning department and subsequently held the function of deputy head of the basic military planning department. During this time he completed the Swiss General Staff Course and in 1999 led the Engineer Battalion 1 in Villach during his deployment of the troops.

At the end of 2003 he was promoted to military commander of Burgenland and brigadier . He held this position until 2017.

In 2004 he completed a degree in political science.

Luif made numerous missions abroad, especially in the Balkans, from 2000 as Austrian contingent commander in Kosovo, 2011/12 as deputy commander of the Kosovo Force (KFOR) and from 2014 to 2016 as commander of the European Union Force (EUFOR) in Bosnia-Herzegovina .

After his return from Bosnia-Herzegovina , he headed the deployment planning department in what was then the Federal Ministry for National Defense and Sport.

On September 1, 2016, he was appointed head of the General Staff Directorate in the Federal Ministry of Defense and promoted to Lieutenant General. On August 20, 2018, the deputy chief of staff was also entrusted with the task of carrying out the agenda.

On May 22, 2019, he was appointed Minister for National Defense and replaced by Thomas Starlinger on June 3, 2019 .
