The National Defense Academy (LVAk) is a subordinate agency of the Austrian Federal Ministry for National Defense . The academy is the department's top teaching and research facility with a tradition going back more than 150 years. It is considered to be the intellectual center of Austrian military science, which is primarily responsible for higher management training. Its seat is the official building in Stiftgasse in Vienna's 7th district .

In the field of teaching, the National Defense Academy provides the basic training of all senior officers (commanders of all tactical levels as well as officers of the general staff service, the director's service, the higher military technical service, the higher military technical service, the military medical service, the military chaplain service and the military veterinary service) and the staff officers from the level of the large association to.

In addition, there is training for executives (professional and militia officers) including advanced training for military leadership and decision-making personnel. The academy also provides military foreign language training and further education for use at home and abroad. Since 2004 the LVAk has been organizing the strategic leadership course on behalf of the Austrian federal government.

The research at the National Defense Academy is divided into the subjects "Strategic Basics", "International Security", "Military and Society", "Operational Leadership", "Tactical Leadership", "Military Logistics", "Leadership and Organization" and "Defense Education" . There is also a central documentation, which ensures ongoing observation, evaluation, archival processing and provision of military and security-political literature.

The youngest institute of the National Defense Academy is the Center for People-Oriented Leadership and Defense Policy (ZMFW), founded in 2015, whose main task is to ensure a contemporary organizational culture for the Austrian Armed Forces. The social science research activities of the ZMFW are published in the reports on the social situation picture.
