Wolfgang Etschmann

Wolfgang Etschmann (born May 17, 1953 in Vienna ) is an Austrian officer ( Oberleutnant dR) and military historian .

Live and act

Etschmann studied history and German studies at the University of Vienna from 1973 to 1979 after completing his AHS Matura . In 1979 he was with the dissertation theory, practice and problems of demobilization 1915-1921 to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1980 he was a research assistant at the archive and library of the Institute for Contemporary History at the University of Vienna .

1981/82 he was a temporary officer in the Austrian Armed Forces , used a. a. as a company commander in the Landwehr Trunk Regiment 21. He was then taken on as a civil servant : From 1982 to 1993 he was a consultant for modern military history at the Military Science Institute / Heeresgeschichtliches Museum (HGM) in Vienna. At times he was also head of the Währing District Museum in Vienna's 18th district. From 1994 to 2010 he was head of the military history research department there. Since 2011 he has been head of the Institute for Human and Social Sciences / Department of War Theory at the National Defense Academy in Vienna. Etschmann has the title of Hofrat .

In 1983 he worked on the teaching aid "Military History" for the Theresian Military Academy (where he teaches) in Wiener Neustadt. He took over responsibility for the series of research on military history (Verlag Styria , 1991 ff.) With Manfried Rauchsteiner and for the writings on the history of the army (Gra & Wis / HGM, 2003 ff.) With Christian Segur-Cabanac . Etschmann is also a research assistant at the Austrian Lexicon and a permanent member of the Austrian Military Journal .

Etschmann was u. a. Vice President of the Austrian Society for Military Studies .
