District Museum Währing

The Währing district museum is a district and local museum dedicated to the 18th Viennese district of Währing at the address Währinger Straße 124.

history

The district museum owes its creation to a private initiative. After 1920, a “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Währinger Heimatkunde” was formed, which was mainly supported by teachers. In 1923/25 the three-volume work “Währing - a home book of the XVIII. Wiener Gemeindebezirkes ”published. The working group ventilated the idea of a Währing local history museum and began a relevant collecting activity. In 1938 a museum association was set up, which, however, was dissolved again by the Nazi authorities after the "Anschluss".

After 1945 the mustard manufacturer Hans Sartory, grandson of the former mayor of Währingen, Alexander Sartory , took up the idea again. On June 7, 1948, the "Währinger Heimatmuseum Association" was re-established, and the museum was opened on May 4, 1952 in some of the rooms of the administrative building. After Sartory's death in July 1960, the museum was temporarily closed, but in 1965, historically interested district councils of the ÖVP and SPÖ reactivated the association on a joint initiative. We succeeded in recruiting Helmut Fielhauer from the University Institute for Folklore and Gerhard Jagschitz from the University Institute for Contemporary History as custodians and founding the quarterly magazine “Unser Währing”. In 1970 the museum was reopened in the office building. At times it was headed by Wolfgang Etschmann . Paul Katt was the museum director until 2011, and Doris Weis has been the museum director since 2012. Exhibitions and concerts are also held in the premises of the district museum.
