The District Museum Mariahilf is a district and local museum dedicated to the 6th Viennese district Mariahilf at the address Mollardgasse 8.

Efforts to set up a Mariahilfer Heimatmuseum already existed in the interwar period. The local researcher Fritz Illing (1899–1967) was the initiator of the museum, which opened in 1951 at 4 Gumpendorfer Straße. In 1963 he published his new “Heimatbuch”. Even Richard Petrziczek (1903-2001) one of the pioneers of the District Museum. For 30 years, 1968–1988, he was the museum director - until he was 95. According to his successor Herbert Sauer, he invested around one million schillings from his private fortune and built the museum almost on his own. It was his second home.

In 1982 the museum moved to the under monument protection standing Art Nouveau building Mollardgasse 8. This building was built in 1914 for the Viennese workers medical insurance. In 2008 the museum reopened after a major renovation. The current director has been Erich Dimitz since 2008.

The collections

A 9 m² model of the Magdalenengrund district (“Ratzenstadl”) from around 1900 is the most spectacular object in the collection. The manufacturer was the painter Anton Bienert (1870–1960). Since 2008, the Mariahilf Glass Museum has been part of the District Museum and, as a branch, the Naschmarkt museum.

Cultural and entertainment venues in the 6th district such as the Theater an der Wien , the Apollo Kino and the Raimund Theater are honored as well as old trades and famous people who lived and worked in Mariahilf, such as the painter Friedrich Amerling . The museum has an extensive collection of old postcards with district motifs, for example on the subject of Naschmarkt or Mariahilfer Straße . The museum also has an extensive collection of coins, medals and gems. The activities of the museum staff also include projects on contemporary history and oral history . The opening times are regular and by appointment. The opening times also apply in summer. The Vienna Phonomuseum , founded in 1983, is also housed in the same building, on the 2nd floor .
